History Files
Scope and Contents
The History Files collection contains research materials documenting parks, sites, structures, organizations, events, and individuals associated with the Fairmount Park System and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. This collection compiles materials from diverse sources over time rather than representing the records of a single office or individual. Typical materials include correspondence, deeds, leases, newspaper clippings, photocopies of published articles and book excerpts, research notes, reports, maps, plans, images, ephemera, meeting minutes, and agreements. The collection documents historically significant events including the 1876 Centennial Exposition, the Battle of Germantown, early auto racing, and ecological improvements along the Schuylkill River. Primary source materials range from a 1690 property deed signed by William Penn to 21st-century lease agreements. This is an active collection with materials added on an ongoing basis.

Abstract
Research and reference files documenting parks, historic houses, structures, organizations, and individuals associated with the Fairmount Park System. Files contain mixed primary and secondary source materials including correspondence, property records, published and unpublished research, newspaper clippings, reports, and images. Materials date from 1690 to the present.
Arrangement
The collection is arranged alphabetically in multiple series. The first series documents individual parks alphabetically from 827 South Street through Ziehler Playground. Within each park series, files are organized first by park feature or structure (e.g., East Fairmount Park, Boathouse Row; East Fairmount Park, Lemon Hill Mansion), then by subject matter including historical background information, Planning Preservation and Property Management Division documentation (capital projects, preservation work, maintenance records), and administrative information (grant applications, "Friends Group" communications, institutional designations).
Following the park series are additional series for Department of Recreation, Fairmount Park System general files, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Fairmount Park Organizations, Fairmount Park Commission, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Subject files, Organizations, and Biographical files.
