Historical note
Manayunk Canal is part of Pennsylvania’s original Schuylkill Navigation system, which is a one hundred eight mile series of dams, locks and slackwater canal segments. The canal was In operation from roughly 1818-1917. In 1978 the Towpath was reconstructed for recreation use, and in 1979 the Canal was purchased by the Fairmount Park Commission. Historic Locks "68," "69" and "70" are located within the Manayunk section. Work to dredge the Manayunk section of the canal currently in permitting (2009). The Park consists of 23.16 acres.
