Fluehr Park
Dates
- Existence: 1690-Present
Historical note
In the eighteenth century, the property was owned by Captain John Barry, and the estate on the property was called "Eton Hall." The estate was purchased by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1847 and renamed "Eden Hall." The Academy of the Sacred Heart operated until 1969. Educational facilities included living quarters, athletic fields, a grotto, a cemetery and a small English gothic chapel designed by ecclesiastical architect Frank Wills. Most of these structures were demolished in the 1980s following the rampage of a catastrophic fire on 31 January 1979. Eden Hall chapel was demolished in November 2007 after an arson fire in 2006. The school property was purchased by real estate executive Joseph C. Fluehr, Sr. for $1.8 million in 1976, and the City established Eden Hall Park same year. The Park was renamed for Joseph C. Fluehr, Sr. in 1984. In 2007 a multi-use trail was completed. The Park is 23.69 acres.
