Scope and Contents

Correspondence regarding site selection for the monument, in which the Green Street entrance, a knoll near the Humboldt statue, and a plateau near the McMichael Monument were each proposed before a final site was selected (1872-1890). Also includes correspondence from Mayor Charles Warwick and Captain A.C. Markley regarding arrangements for U.S. Army troops to encamp in the park following the Grant Monument dedication in New York before attending the Washington Monument dedication ceremonies (1897), a letter from the Committee on the Art Museum notifying the Commission that construction of the Art Museum required relocation of the monument (1921), correspondence regarding condition and maintenance of the monument including a letter from C.L. Borie noting the need for repointing and loss of gold leaf on the lettering (1926-1945), and correspondence from the Park Historian concluding the monument should not be used as a venue for entertainment activities following complaints about damage sustained during July 4th celebrations (1983). Also includes a 1984 conservation press release, correspondence and clippings (1919-2009), and three booklets related to the monument's dedication and site selection.
