William Rush sculptures, 1937-2023
Scope and Contents
Correspondence regarding the loan of Rush sculptures to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for an exhibition of Rush's work, including a letter from Henri Marceau recommending the permanent removal of The Schuylkill Chained and The Schuylkill Freed from their exposed position at the Water Works on the grounds that repeated repainting had obscured Rush's delicate modelling and that as pine sculptures their deterioration was inevitable (1937), and a letter from Marceau confirming the removal and cleaning of paint from the sculptures, and requesting permission to have a bronze cast made of the head of the female figure from The Schuylkill Freed for personal use and for distribution to interested museums (1939). Also includes a letter requesting a photograph of Nymph and Bittern for the Evening Bulletin column "A Rambler in Philadelphia" (1966), transcribed extracts on William Rush from published sources, correspondence and photographs relating to Rush's Wisdom and Justice (1982-1986), and 2023 long-term loan renewal agreements between the Fairmount Park Commission and the Philadelphia Museum of Art for Wisdom, Justice, The Schuylkill Chained, The Schuylkill Freed, and Mercury.
