Marguerite and Faust, 1938-1939, 2006

 File — Drawer: 7.2

Scope and Contents

Correspondence regarding William D. Disston's request to relocate the marble statue he donated to the city from Horticultural Hall to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1938), including consultation with Henri Marceau of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Marceau's assessment that the work was competent but of no outstanding merit, and that frankness was necessary 'even at the expense of having the gift cancelled,' informed the Commission's decision to decline the request. Also includes notes and excerpts (2006).
