Thorfinn Karlsefni, 1914-2020, bulk: 1914-1920
Scope and Contents
Correspondence describing the statue and its inspiration, including a translated letter from sculptor Einar Jónsson detailing the design (1919), and correspondence among George Wharton Pepper, Edward Biddle, Eli Kirk Price, and J. Bunford Samuel regarding a dispute over the correct date of Karlsefni's arrival in North America, ultimately resolved through consultation with Professor Julius Emil Olson of the University of Wisconsin (1919). Also includes an undated letter from Samuel to the Fairmount Park Commission describing the statue, a 1914 memorandum from Samuel expressing grievances regarding the Commission's failure to execute a companion bequest for a memorial fountain, correspondence from the art director of American History Illustrated requesting a photograph of what he initially misidentified as Leif Ericson and noting that the statue's identity was 'irrelevant' as they simply needed a figure of a viking (1968), J. Bunford Samuel's 1922 book 'The Icelander Thorfinn Karlsefni Who Visited the Western Hemisphere in 1007,' and clippings (1978, 2018-2020).
