Scope and Contents Note

This collection includes maps, plans and drawings of Bartram's Garden and the Bartram House and building complex, which includes the Bartram house and additional buildings such as seed house and barn. The Schuylkill River Trail project is also documented in this collection. Items are in a variety of formats, including paper, linen and blueprint, as well as a variety of sizes. The majority of items in this collection were created between 1920 and 1980. While the types of maps included are diverse, the collection is particularly strong in landscape and planting plans of the gardens, and restoration plans for the Bartram House complex.

Historical Note

Items in this collection are from the historic Bartram's Garden site, a National Historic Landmark House and Garden. Established in 1728 by acclaimed botanist John Bartram, and later maintained by two more generations of Bartrams, including the well known naturalist William Bartram, the collection documents the the gardens as well as the house and building complex.

Arrangement Note

This collection is divided into three series: Bartram's Garden, the Bartram House complex and the Schuylkill River Trail at Bartram's Garden. Each series has been subdivided in order to promote more efficient and effective searching. Contents of each subseries are chronologically arranged and alphabetically ordered when dates are unknown.
