David Swope was born in Philadelphia and attended the William Penn Charter School before beginning his architectural education at the University of Pennsylvania in 1945. His career at Penn was interrupted by military service, but he returned to complete a B. Arch. in 1953.
In 1959, he joined the office of George Neff, where he remained until 1963. In 1964, he established his own firm, which specialized in buildings for the frozen food industry, including the Blue Bird Food Products plant in Philadelphia (1967) and the AG Foods building in King of Prussia, PA (1968).
Swope joined the national AIA in 1955 and he was a member of the Philadelphia Chapter.
